Timely Repairs Are Crucial for Your Whole-House Generator

In Shelby Township, natural phenomena like heavy snowstorms, ice storms, and thunderstorms can lead to unexpected power outages. While these events may not happen every day, they can cause long-lasting disruptions when they do. Winter ice and snow can bring down trees and power lines, while strong winds from storms or tornadoes interrupt power supply.

That’s why your whole-house generator must be kept functioning correctly. It ensures that your home remains powered, keeping essential systems like heating, refrigeration, and lighting running when the electricity goes out. However, to rely on your generator during these critical times, it’s important to keep it in peak condition with regular repairs and maintenance.

At Elite Heating and Cooling, we understand the importance of a reliable backup power source. We offer expert repair services to ensure your generator is always ready.  Don’t wait for an outage to discover a problem, keep your home safe, warm, and powered year-round.

Signs That Your Whole-House Generator Needs Repair

Your whole-house generator plays a vital role in keeping your home prepared for emergencies. However, like any home system, generators can experience issues over time. Knowing the signs that your generator needs repair can help you address problems early and avoid losing power when you need it most.

Difficulty Starting

If your generator struggles or fails to start, this could be a sign of a mechanical or electrical issue. Problems with the starter motor, battery, or fuel system are common causes. Regular maintenance can help prevent these issues, but if starting becomes a challenge, it’s time to schedule a repair.

A generator should run smoothly and quietly. Strange noises such as knocking, sputtering, or grinding often indicate underlying problems, like worn-out components, loose connections, or debris in the system. Addressing these sounds quickly can prevent further damage.

If your generator isn’t providing sufficient power to run your home’s essential appliances or the lights flicker when it’s operating, there might be an issue with the generator’s alternator, fuel delivery, or control panel. Low power output reduces your system’s reliability and efficiency.

Modern generators have control panels that display warning lights or error codes when something isn’t working properly. These indicators are designed to alert you to issues that require immediate attention. Consult your generator’s manual or call a professional to diagnose the problem.

Check your generator periodically for signs of physical damage, such as frayed wires, corroded connections, or leaking fluids. Any visible issues could lead to performance problems and should be addressed by a technician as soon as possible.

3 Simple Things to Check First

These simple steps can help restore the operation of your heater while waiting for a technician:

Check the Fuel Level

Ensure the generator has enough fuel. Low or empty fuel is a common cause of a generator stopping, and it's easy to check and top off.

Inspect the Breaker Panel

Check for tripped circuit breakers in the generator's control panel. Resetting the breakers can resolve a minor issue

Examine the Battery

Check the generator's battery to ensure it's charged. If the battery is low or dead, you can jump-start or replace it temporarily.

Reviews From Our Customers

Peter and Chris did an excellent job on our furnace and air conditioner replacement. Peter took the time to do a full measurement of our space and offer a few options that best met our needs and budget. They were professional during installation and took the proper time to make sure everything was done right. I would recommend anyone seeking HVAC service or install reach out to Elite Degrees Heating and Cooling.
I’m always hesitant with calling repair companies because you never know what your going to get. My air would not cool the house below 78 and it was a Saturday. I happened to see someone else ask for AC repair companies on a local FB community page and I grabbed the number for Peter with Elite Degrees. He answered and was prompt to tell me to text him my info and he would come out on Monday. He was right on his word, he showed up on that Monday and looked at the furnace and AC. It was the Motor blower on my 29 year old furnace. Peter was honest. My furnace gave its full life and he offered to replace the blower motor but asked if I gave thought into a new furnace, which I had. Peter measured the space. Came back with a new quote that was around what I estimated. Since it was in the 90’s and sweltering in the house, he was able to get the furnace installed 2 days later. He even came late and stayed till 1am to make sure we at least had air running. Chris, Peter’s associate, showed up to finish the install. It looks great and I can honestly say, I have not felt this much air in the house ever. I really needed that new furnace. Peter and Chris, exceeded my expectations. They were kind, courteous, accommodating. I can’t say enough. You can’t go wrong with this company. I plan on holding on to them for when I need my AC replaced.
Very professional company! I called on a Saturday Peter was willing to come same day; however; my husband wanted to be home. Peter was understanding and offered to come Sunday 8am. Peter was on time and quickly resolved the problem with my AC and at a reasonable price! Highly recommend you won’t be disappointed!!
Peter worked quickly and effectively to get our AC unit working again. He took the time to answer our questions and was very politely and friendly. We are planning to use this business for all our HVAC needs going forward. Highly recommend.
Chris and Peter did a great job! They replaced a leaking 75-gallon water heater the same day. Very professional and courteous. Highly recommended!

Our FAQ

Can I perform generator repairs myself?

It’s not recommended to attempt generator repairs on your own. Generators are complex systems that require specialized knowledge. Hiring a licensed professional ensures the repair is done safely and correctly.

What causes a whole-house generator to stop working?

Generators may fail due to issues like fuel supply problems, battery failure, clogged air filters, or worn-out components. Regular maintenance can help prevent these common issues.

How often should my generator be serviced to avoid repairs?

Most manufacturers recommend servicing your generator at least once a year, or after every 100-200 hours of use. Regular maintenance helps catch small problems before they turn into major repairs.

What happens if I don’t repair my generator promptly?

Delaying repairs can lead to more extensive damage, higher repair costs, and an unreliable generator when you need it most. Prompt repairs ensure your backup power system remains dependable.
